"The liberties of none are safe unless the liberties of all are protected." - William O. Douglas

So Jorge and Michelle are getting married in Cali and the date is getting closer. I'm a groomsman and had RSVPed plus one, but will most likely be going alone. Yesterday I got an email from Michelle with details, important details I need to know before I purchase my ticket and makes plans for September. It is funny because Jorge text messaged us a while back to ask us about suits and told us the winner was blue, but now it is grey. Good job Jorge with keeping us up to date. I don't really care because I'll probably buy a new suit for the wedding anyway since it is the first I've been a part of and the first ceremony of good friends I'll be part of. They are a great people and a great couple and really deserve this. Buy them something nice: http://www.berruandmendoza.weddings.com/.

So my ironic topic that I now bring up is this issue I ran into: The 'Un-Marriage' Trend

Here is the part of the article that caught my eye:

"I’ve been involved in an open relationship with my girlfriend for about two years now. But hang on - before you whip yourself into a wild frenzy of anger and finger-pointing, let me first say that our arrangement is not even close to the type of hedonistic, over-the-top open relationship that most people probably fantasize about. One fact I will happily concede to, however, is that when compared to a commonplace, monogamous dating situation, ours is certainly is non-traditional. To wit: My girlfriend and I both occasionally see other women."

"Because while we may indeed be living in a freaky-deeky world, it’s a heck of a lot easier to navigate – and a whole lot more fun - when you’re living through it with a loving and devoted partner in crime."

I think I could deal with that. Probably not though. The article is about couples in in loving, monogamous relationships who are very leery about the idea of getting traditionally hitched.

Obama is now our Democratic presumptive nominee. I look forward to seeing how things pan out with Clinton and hope that Veepstakes is over quick because I feel like the issues have been ignored for sometime. I do look forward to the change.

Here is a part of Obama's Tuesday speech I really liked:

"All of you chose to support a candidate you believe in deeply. But at the end of the day, we aren’t the reason you came out and waited in lines that stretched block after block to make your voice heard. You didn’t do that because of me or Senator Clinton or anyone else. You did it because you know in your hearts that at this moment – a moment that will define a generation – we cannot afford to keep doing what we’ve been doing. We owe our children a better future. We owe our country a better future. And for all those who dream of that future tonight, I say – let us begin the work together. Let us unite in common effort to chart a new course for America."

You learn many lessons from your parents, some good, some bad and many neutral. I think it is what you do with those lessons that is important. Here is a lesson that came to mind recently when my father told me about advice he gave to my sister. His advice was good, mainly that she should purchase the home since it is an amazing opportunity and that everything else would fall into place. I think that is a good way of looking at it, but the subtext to me ignored the fact that she was not happy with the home and therefore it had a feeling of settling to me. When I was younger, my Dad would tell me stories about his days growing up. Now that I think about it, my mother never really told me any post-high school stories. One of them was the story every child asks, the how their parents met story. I won't get into the specifics of the story and it was probably a very romantic story and I don't mean to take anything away from it, but the one thing I remember most, that never left me, was a statement he made. He told me that it was time in his life to get married and that since my mom was the person he was with and cared about, he asked her. I'm sure that is over simplifying it and ignoring the fact that love did play an important role, but that statement just came off to me like he wanted something and the time was right so he went for it. As a kid my first thought was, oh no, I don't want to get married because I'm of that age and I'm with a person I care about, I want it to be something I want because I feel that that person is the one that I want to spend the rest of my life with, who is worthy, who I know will be a good partner in crime. The idea of letting things fall into place afterwards just isn't the way I want to go about it. When I make a decision I'm happy with, then I know things will fall into place, but will not let the hope they will fall into place justify the decision. I know that is clear as mud, but that lesson I apply to everything in my life, my decisions, my goals and what I'm willing to accept. So I won't just take a job because it is there and hope things work out, or let life happen to me before I can happen to it. Now the truth is, I may not always follow my own view in this respect, but I try to and that is what is most important.

Another birthday. I should do some math to figure out what 9 months ago was. Today is Rino's girlfriend Jess's birthday. We had dinner with a group of friends in San Marcos. It was fun, but it seems like everyone there was in couples. It is interesting to see how different the dynamics are between different people.

After Abram and I headed downtown to a bar that plays Salsa music. Oscar met up with us there. I got there too late for lessons, so we just hung out and enjoyed the music. I talked to some people from Columbia who were there celebrating a birthday. Going out on Wednesdays are hard because the whole going to bed late plus work plus hangover isn't too easy.

Bekkah is in town for band and Abram and I were going to take her to dinner tomorrow, but they changed their plans to go to Fiesta Texas instead. We still might get to see her perform on Saturday.

lack of action tells you a lot about a person's feelings
