It has been a while since I have had a three day weekend. I went to Corpus Christi for the Memorial Day weekend. I was in the need of a good vacation.
Friday I had intended to drive to Corpus Christi after work, but because of what I was working on, I ended up staying at work much later than I had planned. It was one of the very few times I have worked overtime. I was happy to get everything done, but it meant for a very late take off. Once I got on the road, I was slowed down by a terrible traffic jam outside of San Antonio. It just wasn't my day for getting my holiday started early. Nevertheless, I was happy to be out and on my 3 day weekend.
Erika arrived at the hotel much sooner than I did. Her trip being shorter compounded with my getting delayed led to her beating me by much more than I had expected. Once I got in, I valeted my car, unpacked and then we went to have a late dinner at a local seafood restaurant. The food was somewhat of a let down for me, but I'm just glad that place was open.
Saturday morning, we had lunch downtown and then set off for the beach. There were many beaches to choose from, but we decided to go to Mustang Island. It was a nice scenic drive and once we got there, we were amazed by how many people and families were there. Unfortunately, the day was not ideal for the beach and it started to rain. Comparatively, South Padre still wins hands down.
After the beach, we drove around Padre Island and found a place that offered horseback riding. We decided to give it a try. It was a good hour and a half ride up and down the beach. At first I wasn't able to control my horse as well as I wanted, but after a few minutes, the Texan in me kicked in and I was able to make him go and stop and move left and right with no problem. It was pretty fun. I wonder if the horses like it or if they would rather just be back at the stables hanging out. My horse wanted to trot and gallup a lot.
After riding horses on the beach, I was surprised to see how much my knees hurt when trying to walk. The stiffness gave way after a few minutes though. We then headed back downtown and went to a trade center shopping plaza. They sold all kinds of random things there, but my favorite were the Mexican coke and the pickle we bought.
Our hotel had a very nice and very expensive restaurant on the top floor. We went there for dinner on Saturday night. I got all dressed up and had a very good steak. We had a table with an amazing view of the beach and the city.
Sunday, we had lunch at a two story Whataburger. Since it was founded in Corpus Christi, it makes sense that they would have a huge one. We did not get to visit the Selena statute, mainly because I wasn't exactly sure where it was. Maybe next time. After lunch, we went to the Texas State Aquarium right by the Lexington. I have to say, it was only ok. I felt like I enjoyed the aquarium in Dallas a lot more. This one just felt like it had less fish. Then again, I might of just been tired of looking at fish and the general appeal might of faded. The dolphin was pretty cool.
Here are the pictures from the trip: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hyadus/sets/72157618977566160/I had Monday off as well, so I spent it back at home relaxing. I had McDonalds breakfast, a ritual I seem to do about once a month on Sundays. I then went to watch the new Terminator movie alone. I haven't been to see a movie alone in a very long time, but I wanted to see this movie. I was disappointed in what the movie could of been, but as a fan of the Terminator, I was happy to just see something.
BTW, Summer is here: Please don't pee in the pool - After reading this article I don't want to ever go in a pool again.
I caught up with my friend Angie from DC today. I found out from her that she and Bob have Kayaks. That seems really fun and cool. She also told me that they plan to come to Austin in October for ACL. I was beyond excited to be hosting them. If anyone else is going to be town that weekend, let me know. I missed ACL last year, but can't wait to go this year. I think I'll just go on Saturday and Sunday since I work on Friday. It should be fun.
